Life has a way of teaching us survival skills, coping mechanisms that help us navigate obstacles. But what happens when those very skills, developed in response to life’s challenges, turn into barriers that keep us emotionally distant? As someone who wears both the hat of a counselor and a person on this journey, I’ve come to understand the high price of self-protection and the incredible value of tearing down those walls creating a pathway for true connection. Now, let’s delve into the intricacies of self-protection, the hidden costs of emotional fortification, and the relatable struggles many of us face on the path to tearing down walls and embracing vulnerability
The Cost of Emotional Fortification
Growing up, I learned to shield myself from criticism with a barricade of indifference to the words people said to me. This survival skill made me feel safe, but little did I know it was isolating me emotionally. While other’s critical words didn’t penetrate my heart, neither did their affirmations. The walls I built unintentionally kept all words out, leaving me feeling unseen and unappreciated. Although shielded from criticism, I had created a dynamic where even appreciative words went unheard by me.
We All Have Our Ways
In my counseling practice, I’ve seen various forms of self-protection. Denial, perfectionism, isolation, mistrust of everyone, the constant need for validation, performance-driven behavior – I’ve been there. These behaviors aren’t just quirks; they are shields we use to protect ourselves from potential hurt, disappointment, and rejection based on our core beliefs.
The Fear of Being Truly Seen
Being vulnerable is scary, especially when past relationships have left scars. Personally, I struggled with the fear of being truly seen. My fear shouted, “What if people don’t like what they see when I’m fully present?” “What if the criticisms from my past are accurate estimations of my value?” The fortress I built around myself seemed impenetrable, keeping me from authentic connections. It was easier to control the isolation by my withdrawal from emotional vulnerability than to face it through the potential rejection from others.
Building a Bridge with Jesus
Breaking down our emotional walls requires a revelation of truth and the hand of Jesus leading us out into the open. He’s the only person we will encounter who doesn’t have some measure of dysfunction. He already knows our deepest selves and He sees it as lovely. He labeled Himself as deliverer when He read the words of Isaiah in Luke 4:18 (NIV) which says, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” In order to connect with Him in this way, I verbally invited Him inside my wall. Once inside, He convinced me to allow Him to protect my heart with truth about my lovability to both Him and to others. Once I truly understood my worth from His perspective, other’s hurtful words no longer had the power to influence what I believed about myself, leaving them less ability to hurt me.
The Battle for Self-Worth
Rebuilding self-worth is a daily practice. Seeing myself from Jesus’s perspective gave me a foundation of discovery into what I can appreciate about who I am innately. Armed with new insights about my identity, I wrote affirmations on the bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker and created a personalized song playlist. These reminders became my allies in the new wilderness of knowing my self-worth. Understanding that my opinion of myself matters most, after God’s, helped me overcome the temptation to hide from others and to doubt my worth.
The Surprising Discoveries
As I dismantled my self-imposed barriers, I realized that I was seen, admired, and loved more than I realized. Love from others flowed into my life as the walls crumbled. I was then able to see what the walls had blinded me to before. It was a beautiful transaction, exchanging isolation for connection. I discovered that the majority of my fears were unfounded. People really did value me after all.
Your Journey, Your Worth
The journey from self-protection to vulnerability is uniquely personal. It’s about breaking free from emotional isolation and embracing authentic connections. We all have our walls, but tearing them down allows us to experience love, acceptance, and the profound truth that we are seen, valued, and worthy of connection.
Embracing vulnerability isn’t a weakness; it’s a courageous step toward a more fulfilling and authentic life. Tearing down walls isn’t just a personal quest – it’s an invitation to connect, to be seen, and to experience the beauty of God’s love and of genuine human connection. The journey is yours to take, and the rewards are worth the vulnerability.
For help in breaking free from your own walls, take these steps:
1. Recognize that you have created self-protection because of fear which eventually, destructively, turns back against you.
2. Invite the Lord inside your walls of self-protection.
3. Ask Him to reveal His perspective of your situation.
4. Let Him show you what He’s offering in exchange for your walls.
5. Risk taking His hand as He leads you out and away from your own means of self-protection.
6. Develop better practical tools to deal with what sent you behind the walls in the first place. For me, this looked like developing a habit of quieting my mind when someone gave me a compliment, purposely absorbing their words, and responding simply with, “Thank you.”
